Body in burning car a mystery Police are still unsure who the female body parts that were found in a burning car belong to. On Sunday afternoon, police and the fire service were called to a burning grey Nissan Sunny down a bank on the Whangamoas. Parts of a body were found in the car. Police, Urban Search and Rescue, the Fire Service and a private crane operator hauled the car up the bank yesterday afternoon with a four tonne crane. Forensic scientists were at the scene to determine whether it should be treated as a homicide but no details were available when Nelson Weekly went to print. The incident was first reported by Nelson Live on Sunday. Nelson fire officer Craig Davies says the car went about 30 metres down the cliff and the suspicious fire “was intense”. Detective Senior Sergeant Ciaran Sloan says police were dealing with a difficult and dangerous location. “Our priorities are to keep the peo-

He says a more detailed examination of the vehicle would then be undertaken at a safer location. Police are making a range of inquiries to help establish who the deceased person is and the sequence of events that led to the car fire. They say they’d like to speak with anyone who may have seen a 1995

Those with an IQ “taller than average” took their chances at getting into Mensa as they attended a testing session on Saturday. Mensa is open to anybody who scores in the top two percent in a fluid intelligence test. Judith Tuckwell, testing coordinator for Nelson, says she always noticed she had to “edit” her conversations heavily be-
fore joining Mensa in the late 1960s. “When I joined Mensa I discovered that, when I am enthusiastic about something, I can overwhelm other people. When I was actually in a Mensa group I suddenly realised that I could say exactly what I liked and I would get a response that I had only dreamt of getting before. It’s a bit like a horse being let out of a stable going for a gallop, and I can just go for it.” Judith, now in her 70s, was the
27th Mensan in New Zealand. She started a social group in the Hawkes Bay before moving to Nelson. “That is what I’d like to create in Nelson. I’d love to have a mixed group. Mixed ages, mixed interests and the delight of the conversations.” There are around 400 Mensans in New Zealand but only two known in Nelson.

Trafalgar Centre to open in nine months Jessie Johnston
Getting the doors to the refurbished Trafalgar Centre open by the February 2016 deadline will be the “single biggest challenge” for newly-appointed contractor, Gibbons Construction. Gibbons, along with Downer, have been awarded the contract to bring the city’s major events centre up to standard, after it was closed in late 2013. Gibbons’ chief operations officer, Shane Trench, says he’s pleased they’ve been appointed
early in the design process, but admits getting the centre open on time will be the “single biggest challenge”. “It obviously depends a little bit on the design. But Downer and Gibbons bring two heavily-resourced companies to the table, which means that if we need to, we can ramp up the project and accelerate it to ensure we get there for February.” The council closed the Trafalgar Centre in December 2013 on advice that the building’s low earthquake ratings could leave it liable in the event of a

major quake. The first design work for the centre is due in July. Shane says Gibbons were thrilled to be picked from the tender process because the project is of “huge significance” to the region. Another frightening accident on one of Queen Street’s courtesy crossings has again raised concerns about the safety of the crossings, with a nearby retailer saying it’s only a matter of time before a pedestrian is seriously injured. Richmond’s Tracy Mahon suffered a broken ankle when she was hit and run over by a car on the courtesy crossing near Sundial Square on April 23. It was the second serious incident on the crossing in the last three years after a 10-year-old schoolboy was hit and pinned underneath a car in September 2012. “I was three-quarters of the way across the crossing and the car hit me in the hip and knocked me backwards,” Tracy, who works at the ANZ Bank, says. “I tried to get up but my foot was trapped under the wheel. “I was screaming really loud but I don’t think the driver heard me - he was an old guy and I think he was in shock. was really scary being trapped I’m still seeing visions of it now.” Tracy uses the crossing daily as she walks to work, and usually goes home for lunch and says she has always had concerns about its safety. She says many drivers and pedestrians are uncertain about the rules relating to courtesy crossings and that creates confusion, increasing the risk of accidents. “The courtesy crossings might have been okay 10 or 15 years ago, but Richmond has got so big. There are so many cars and people on Queen St now they need to make the crossings safer.” The New Zealand Road Code states that drivers and pedestrians using courtesy crossings should treat each other with polite, respectful consideration. However, it makes it clear that “drivers are not obliged to stop at courtesy crossings” and says pedestrians need to cross them carefully. Warren Ludemann, who owns Made For Men directly opposite the crossing, says it is the second accident he has seen there and something needs to be done to make it safer. He says courtesy crossings are confusing and there needs to be signage erected to make it clear that pedestrians have to give way to traffic.

New store for Kaiteri Southern Link study prompts Rocks Rd deadline extension Holiday makers will be able to enjoy brand new facilities next summer with stage two of the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve redevelopment underway. Stage two of the redevelopment has commenced with the old store being demolished. “Over the years, the board has looked at health and safety issues as well as the experience of coming to Kaiteriteri, along with the use of the land and assets, and decided to redevelop. “We hope that people will enjoy it more and the changes will tidy up the flow of traffic and bring people together in one central area,” says Chris

The land for the new Kaiteriteri store has been dug out and filled, making way for the foundations to be laid. The plans involve a new general store located on a similar footprint to the old store with around eight motel units above.
The area between the store and the cafe out to the road will also be developed, with a pedestrian-only courtyard at the same level as the existing cafe deck. Tourism concession booths will be situated in this area in addition to outside furniture. The petrol pumps will be relocated to the back of the new carpark and there are also some changes to the cafe to facilitate service into the courtyard. The surrounding area will also receive a makeover, with grounds around the lagoon developed and a boardwalk constructed. The rebuild is due to be finished by November this year.

Nelson’s deadline to spend its $26 million of “R funding” has been extended, but two major projects are ready to start as soon as next year, says the chair of the Nelson Regional Land Transport Committee. Eric Davy says the $7.1 million upgrade of the Rai Saddle and the $3.1 million upgrade of the Quarantine Rd roundabout could start next year. “They are both locked in as priorities and are very important to road safety in Nelson. Especially the Rai Saddle project, we have far too many accidents on that road.” The Rai Saddle project will see one curve on the Nelson side of the saddle taken out and the road widened and straightened. The Quarantine Rd project will see a major upgrade of the current intersection. The third major project earmarked for money from the governmentallocated R fund was the Rocks Rd promenade. It is that project that has sparked the extension of the R-funding deadline. That’s because if the government investigation into the

Southern Link shows that the new road should be built it will change the rules for the Rocks Rd upgrade. Eric says, if the Southern Link was built then Rocks Rd would no longer be a state highway and the proposed boulevard could be much wider and done for far cheaper. “If the Southern Link may proceed then we might be able to do the boulevard at far less cost and much bigger. “[This decision] gives us time to breath, we don’t have to commit to a project that we may not have to proceed with. We’re very happy with the extension. It gives us the ability to make sure what we’re doing is the best that we can for the region.” Other projects completed with Rfunding money include the cycleways in Victory and Tahunanui. The new date that the money must be spent by is June 20, 2021. Originally the deadline was June 30, 2018.

Neil Balloch was “lucky”. He was given darkened glasses to wear when the nuclear bomb went off. Others had to watch it with just their hands over their eyes, seeing the bones in their hands light up like an x-ray machine. But that was where Neil’s supposed luck ended. Neil – who lives in Atawhai – was one of 570 New Zealanders who witnessed the British nuclear testing at Christmas Island in the Pacific in the late 1950s. The ship he was on, the HMNZS Rotoiti, was stationed just 25 miles away from “ground zero”, letting off weather balloons. They saw the bomb dropped and sailed through the radiation zone as acid rain fell on them. Later, they sat on the beach of Christmas Island drinking beer and catching and eating fish from the radiation zone. He says, at the time he’d never heard the word “nuclear” and they had no idea of the side-effects of radiation. “We had no idea, when the bomb went off it was just a sense of wonder. Look at this amazing thing, fancy seeing something like that? We never thought it would be more than that.” Six decades on, Neil is one of about 60 Kiwis still alive who witnessed the bomb testing. Many died of various cancers and Neil himself has many medical issues, including cancer. His first wife struggled to give birth, and when she did her children and grandchildren have suffered varying degrees of birth defects, including a

Photo: Andrew Board. grandson born with a severe case of cleftpallet. “He had no mouth,” explains Neil. “From the bottom of his nose to his chin was a hole. It took 14 surgeries to fix him.” For three decades the New Zealand Nuclear Test Veterans Association (NZNTVA) has fought for compensation for the veterans and also for the “innocent offspring”. A study by Massey University showed that the chromosomes of veterans at the testing have been “fragmented”, leading to longlasting effects for “generations”. The study found that the chromosome damage in veterans at the testing was three times that of the normal population and on par with the Chernobyl clean-up workers.
The UK’s Daily Mirror newspaper reported that a British study showed that the wives of servicemen at the testing had three times the rate of miscarriage, children are five times more likely to die as infants, babies are three times more likely to be stillborn, veterans’ grandchildren are eight times more likely to have birth defects and are twice as likely to get childhood cancer. They reported that the problems are likely to last at least 500 years, or 20 generations. Veterans in the UK have attempted to sue the government for compensation, but have so far been declined the right to go to court. However, a decision last week by a UK coroner delivered an open verdict
on two nuclear test veterans saying they died of radiation-linked illness, which veterans, hope could open the door to compensation. The New Zealand government has never officially recognised that the veterans involved in Operation Grapple were exposed to radiation, nor offered any compensation. Last year, members of the NZNTVA met with then-veterans affairs minister, Michael Woodhouse, with two items on the agenda. To get the government to officially recognise that veterans were irradiated and for the government to make a public statement to that effect, and for the off-spring of veterans to be researched to establish if they are suffering genetic damage as a consequence of their father or grandfather's exposure to radiation. Both requests were declined. Neil says he feels sick when thinking back to what they witnessed. “It all makes me very angry. We were guinea pigs. After the bomb, they said radiation had been detected on our ship and we were told to turn on these sprinklers and hose the ship down. But the sprinklers didn’t work because they had been rushed in and they didn’t really have the fresh water to use them, all the fresh water was used to power the ship because it was a steam engine." Neil says he wants the government to acknowledge the radiation they suffered and to pay compensation, "not for me but for my children and grandchildren, that's what makes me really irate."

‘Smiley Cindy’ cheers up drivers
Drivers often get frustrated when they are delayed by road works, but Higgins Contracting’s super-cheerful stop-go girl Cindy Thompson is doing her best to change all that. For the last three weeks, Cindy has been helping traffic flow at the road works at the intersection of State Highway 6 and Aniseed Valley and Edens roads. The road has been reduced to one lane while the intersection is being widened to make it safer and the stop-go team have been busy keeping the traffic moving. But instead of becoming annoyed at the delays, many of the drivers are enjoying interacting with the smiley Cindy. Burly trucks drivers can be seen laughing and car drivers tooting as Cindy waves, signals and dances her way through the day. “You have to be very aware of the traffic in this job but I also like to interact with the drivers,” Cindy says. “I have lots of people who smile and say ‘you have made my day’ - I feel I have done my job if I can make one person smile.” Cindy says she loves her job and, despite the theatrical signals and amusing dance moves,
takes it seriously. After making “the bad decision to leave school at 15” and spent a few years working in factories, she is also enjoying being outdoors. “When I did the training for this job with Allied Work Force they said you have to smile and be happy because you are the face of the company,” she says. “I guess I just take that a little further than most,” she says. Cindy is also cheering up her workmates who admit they are enjoying her antics as much as the drivers. “Nobody likes being stuck in traffic so it’s nice that Cindy can brighten up their day,” says Higgins’ surfacing foreman Alan Hosking. The road works are expected to be completed by the end of this week.

If you live in the Nelson region, there's a pretty good chance that Wayne Eggers has had something to do with the timber used to build your house. Wayne retired last week after more than 40 years in the timber trade in Nelson, and it's fair to say he has probably seen more posts, poles and timber loaded up on trucks and dispatched to building sites than anyone else. And, after starting off logging trees for WE Wilkes in 1973 and ending his career as trade sales manager for Placemakers Saxton Rd branch, he has also been involved in every stage of the timber industry. "I started off in banking and then went off on my OE," Wayne says. "It wasn't until I came back that I went into forestry, logging post wood and poles for WE Wilkes Appleby plant. "Then Odlins bought out Wilkes and the forestry and sawmill manager Royce Seymour retired, so I took over his job. There was quite a bit to it - managing Odlins forests and logging crews, and log buying and exporting. "But then Winstones bought out Odlins and sold off all the forests, so I became

It was quite big back then - it extended halfway into where the Richmond Mall car park is now." Wayne completed his final career move nine years ago when Placemakers closed its Queen St site and relocated to Saxton Rd, where he continued his role as trade sales manager. Although Wayne says "wood is still wood", he has seen a number of big changes in the timber and hardware trade over the last 40 years. The intro-
duction of computerised cutting, prenailed frame and trusses and an explosion in the range of "products that provide a solution for every building problem", have made building faster and easier. "These days, builders just fit a house together which is sad, but it's just the modern way. Time is money and all these changes mean they can build a house really quickly now." Wayne says he will miss working with all the great people in the timber and hardware trade and building industry.

Art gallery collective after new artists Andrew Board
Finding space on gallery walls can be tough for any artist, but for the first time in its history the Art@203 collective is putting out the call for new artists to come and exhibit on their walls. Art@203 has been going for more than seven years. It started with five artists and has had as many as 11, but is now back down to seven. Founding artist Bob Roderique says many artists have come and gone over the years depending on their work at the time, and he’s keen for a few more to come forward and help keep the variety of the collective alive. “We’ve had people come, go and come back again. It’s a very nurturing environment and we all learn off each other.” Sheree Phyn just joined the collective a month ago and says she’s excited to be a part of it. “It’s wonderful to see the balance of work here. It’s quite complementary, yet we are all very different. It’s a great atmosphere, everyone is so welcoming.” The gallery is above the

Bob says while they do have regular local shoppers, tourists make up about twothirds of their sales. “We have paintings all over the world, Italy, England, Australia and more.” Artists who are a part of the collective pay a monthly fee and must do a few days a month working in the gallery. Ten per cent of each sale also goes to the collective for general maintenance. Bob says the gallery is popular because the work is of a high
standard and not overpriced. “We keep our prices low, down to Nelson prices for sunshine wages.” Sheree says being a part of a gallery that sells your work is a great experience. “It’s good because you often get to meet the person who bought your art and you are able to keep your connection with the work. Campers nearly all sold "The first shipment has now been sold and the available stock for September is running out quickly” says Pete Stukenberg from Richmond Cars and Commercials. For nearly two months he has been the new South Island dealer for the range of Auto Trail campervans. Built on the high performance chassis of the new Fiat Diesel they are assembled and built in England. An impressive 150 hp and six speed sequential auto means you will no longer be holding up the traffic uphill as you tour New Zealand. “They are changing the face of motorhomes in New Zealand,” says Pete. “These sell for only $130,000 plus on road and yet I still see 2010 campers second hand selling for $145,000 so that makes these a real bargain. And it’s all the latest technology and upgrades." And a number of locals agree as Pete’s first shipment are now all sold.
The new range of Auto trail campervans that have proven to be extremely popular here in Nelson. “I would seriously urge anyone considering buying one of these to come in and talk to us soon as. We are now placing our orders for September/October delivery and at the rate they are selling we will run out of stock.” Pete reckons that the designers and builders have really got it right with these campers and the public are responding well. “It just makes sense when you
have a look around the vehicle. Anti rattle cupboards, full insect screens that discretely fold away, a decent size engine and probably the most important thing is that huge safety issue, a left hand entry cabin door. Do you believe that some other brand campers let you out right hand side and here in NZ that’s right into the traffic!” Pete says he has had great feed-
back from customers and said a number of features are really standing out. The permanent double bed, a full kitchen with pantry, a great sized bathroom with swivel toilet and separate shower and the huge amount of storage available. Add to that ceiling fans, a three way fridge with icebox and swivel front seats that quite frankly are like big lazy boys and all of the win-
dows have dark blinds so you get to cut out all the bright light when you need to. “Although you only need a car license to drive these the engineers have added a couple of great extras as well with traction control to help get out of slippery grass camping sites and “hillstart” that helps make it easier for the driver to take off up or down hill”. Pete also adds that there are a huge range of additions including solar and Sky TV so the options are endless when it comes to turning one of these into your home away from home. Best of all says Pete, with this camper you just pull up, swivel the seats around and put on the jug. No hassle whatsoever and very, very comfortable and after all isn’t that what it’s all about? Nayland Kindy to host 'girl's night out' Mums in the region will be treated to a night of fun and fashion next week at Nayland Kindergarten’s annual fundraiser. The Girls Night Out! and Fashion Show is the major fundraiser for the kindergarten, and is a rare chance for mums to get dressed up and be pampered. Six models, made up of mums and teachers from Nayland Kindergarten, will strut their stuff down the catwalk wearing de-
signer fashion from Stacey Clothing, and hair and make-up by Cardells Hair and Ko Cosmetics. “It is a chance for mums to get dressed up and have a good time, tickets are an ideal Mother’s Day gift, and we are encouraging mums to bring along their mothers and children to treat their mums by buying them a ticket to the show,” says Jen Comer, organizing committee chairperson.
All ladies will receive a goody bag on the night, which includes product samples, discount vouchers, gifts, treats and magazines. There will also be stalls demonstrating local beauty and well-being products, as well as raffles and spot prizes which include dining vouchers, an Interislander package, books, movie passes, and hair and beauty products. Last year’s event raised $3000 and was so
popular that a larger number of tickets are available this year. All funds received will go towards the development of the outdoor area, to increase the children’s creativity and exploration in a natural environment. Big turn out for Nelson half marathon
There were the guns and there were the mums, the Nelson Shoe Clinic Half Marathon on Sunday attracted them all. The Nelson Athletics Club-run event started in perfect conditions at Saxton Field on Sunday morning. Bang on 300 people entered the half or quarter marathon, or 5km fun run. The men's winner of the half marathon was Christchurch's Oska Inkster-Baynes in a scorching time of 1:09:29. He was followed by Nelson's Kim Hogarth in a time of 1:16:10. In the women's race, Nelson's Paula Canning won her tenth straight Nelson Half Marathon. Cliff Bowman won the quarter marathon in 38:36, while Hunta Sutherland was the first woman home in the quarter marathon in 43:36. Warm ups are over, netball season starts this week Nelson Netball Premier Grade will get underway at Saxton Stadium on Thursday night with teams having a “warm up” of two shortened games before the season properly begins the following week. On paper, Richmond Glass looks to be the team to beat as they set out to defend their title. Mikaela Powick is the only loss, as she is now at university, while a noteworthy acquisition is Jess Bygate who has transferred from Jacks. She will prove to be a formidable shooting duo with Nicky Rampton, while promising youngster Aimee Book will also bolster the offensive lineup. The remainder of Richmond’s roster is tried and true with a wealth of talent and experience across the court. Richmond have had the benefit of game time at the Super Club Competition in Christchurch in early March, where they faced teams who played with more speed, however they were disappointed with their outings in Nelson the following week. Coach Kathleen Thornalley is looking forward to the eight team competition, however she does have to contend with the unavailability of her three Nelson Sparks basketball players in the coming weeks. Runners up from 2014, Jacks OPD, have lost the services of ace shooter, Ani Waitai, however Welsh shooter Rebecca James has returned to the side. Jess Drummond has returned to Nelson from Christchurch and is likely to make her presence felt through the mid court. Jacks claimed the Geraldine Hodgson Tournament trophy last weekend, when

The Hope Community Church’s week long Hopefest starts next Saturday May 16 with the incredibly popular Big Share Fair. The church held their first Hopefest in 2009 and it was such a success that it has become a biennial event. And it’s not surprising that it is the most popular event at Hopefest with the church collecting hundreds of donated items to give away to the community. Senior Pastor Donald Irvine says Hopefest is all about giving back to the community and the Big Share Fair provides a generous and fun format for doing just that. People are issued with free Hope Notes when they walk in the door of the church and can “spend” the money on the wide range of items at the fair. “We get most of the items donated by our church family but things come from near and far. The donated items extend to food, goods and services either available on the day or by vouchers that can be redeemed at a time to suit both parties. Vouchers can be for the services of a handyman, babysitter or even a meal cooked for your family. Everyone gives so generously so we can give back to the community” Donald says. The Big Share Fair will be held at the church 114 Ranzau Rd West
in Hope on Saturday May 16 from 9:30am – 12:30pm. Hopefest’s theme of giving to the community doesn’t stop there with the church holding a free Charity Quiz night on Friday May 22. Instead of keeping the prizes, the winning teams will get to give a total prize pool of $3000, donated by the church, to the Nelson Marlborough Hospice, Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, St John, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Red Cross Refugee Services. The quiz starts at 7:30pm. Hopefest also includes three free seminars from Tuesday May 19 to Thursday May 21 (see advertisement opposite for details) The seminars start at 7:30pm with no booking required.
